Learning Log: ASSURE Model ASSURE Model divides technology integration into six phases. When it comes to integrating game-based learning into your instruction, which phase(s) do you think is the most critical? What are the elements/steps a teacher should pay particular attention to? Support your choices by citing sources from the module’s reading.
When looking closely at the ASSURE Model I believe that all phases are important when implementing game-based learning into our daily activities. However, there are two phases that stick out to me as being a must HAVE in any plan developed by the teacher.
The first phase that I feel is extremely important would be the analyse of learner. I believe as a teacher it is so important that we look at the previous data before students enter our classroom. We need to have background knowledge so that we can prepare our lesson to best fit the needs of the students. This will also help guide our pace when selecting what web based or app based tools we choose. Many game based/apps have levels for learners before they begin playing. As a teacher we need to know what level to ask our students to click, when logging in on an app. We do not want to discourage students from playing games by choosing a level that is too challenging but we also do not want to turn our students off by having assignments too easy. This is where understanding and knowing the level that students are entering in each year will help us prepare the games we plan to implement. I believe it is also vital to understand the learning needs of each student. Students learn in various ways and in our lessons it is best when we adapt our teaching to the style of learners. With background knowledge of our students and if utilized correctly, this will only enhance each lesson!
The next most important phase in our ASSURE model to me would be phase 3. The material, and the media work together to guide the goal objectives for the lessons. The method that we choose to go about is important when applying it to a certain skills or task. Many times I have reflected upon my lessons and learned that I chose the wrong material/app to use when presenting my content. I have learned that GREAT apps do not fit every subject or standard lesson objective. This is why it is important for us as educators to understand the purpose of each app to allow it to be most effective for our students. The materials that matches these lessons need to align and with the media playing a role in our lessons, it is sure to catch the attention of our students.
As you can see the ASSURE model has six phases that all play a huge role when planning a lesson. Each phase needs to be implemented to create the best lesson for students!
