Game #1: Kids Games – Educational Computer Games Online
Using Kids Games resources I was able to find an article that lets students choose a person that they would like to research. While looking at the people whom students could research I found an astronaut that describes the biography of John Glenn. In our reading standard students are able to compare characters/people and how their life has impacted the sequence of events. I would have students use the reading story of Neil Armstrong and compare to the new article by using the website Kids Games to deepen their understanding of the comparison of historical influential people. Standard: 3.RL.7.2 I can compare and contrast how an author uses characters to develop theme and plot in different texts within a series. |
Game #2: Fun Brain Fun brain features many exciting games, colourful graphics, cartoon characters and many more which makes learning an easy job and a loved job for the kids. More than 40 games, each one of them customizable for varying levels of ability and are also tied to the national curriculum standards. One game that I found that would be a great game for math is the Estimation game.Estimation is a game that uses and interactive video to help motivate students to join the Digits crew as they solve problems both interstellar and mathematical! I enjoy this game and think it could be useful to my class because it takes the estimation and applies how money, angles, time, etc. can all be forms of estimation. This helps students apply this skill to a variety of objects and programs throughout their year of learning. Standard: 3.MDA.2 I can estimate and measure liquid volumes (capacity) in customary units (i.e., c., pt., qt., gal.) and metric units (i.e., mL, L) to the nearest whole unit. |
Game #3: Reflex Math Fact Fluency
Adaptive and individualized, Reflex is the most effective system for mastering basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for grades 2+. Full of games that students love, Reflex takes students at every level and helps them quickly gain math fact fluency and confidence. And educators and parents love the powerful reporting that allows them to monitor progress and celebrate success. In third grade students are expected to learn their multiplication facts. Many times students will write their facts down but these are never checked until the teachers has time to grade them. With limited time it only makes sense to have students on an online interactive program that guides students to checking their work while quickly practicing their math facts. Standard: 3.AT0.5-I can apply properties of operations (i.e., Commutative Property of Multiplication, Associative Property of Multiplication, Distributive Property) as strategies to multiply and divide and explain the reasoning. |
Game #4: iCivic
iCivics is a safe, educational site designed to help kids learn (and teachers teach) about civics topics, including democracy, constitutional law, the branches of government, elections, and campaigns. Using engaging, interactive games and innovative educational materials, the site aims to prepare students in the real world. This program can help many of our students when learning about the branches of government. I found a 30 minute lessons that breaks down each branch of governments and has students interacting in real time to learn about the power and influence that each branch makes. This will help students practice in class and at home by having access online. This is a great way to replace a worksheet and again, students receiving instant feedback. Standard: S3-3.5- I can outline the structure of state government, including the branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial), the representative bodies of each branch (general assembly, governor, and supreme court), and the basic powers of each branch. |

Game #5: Pink Cat Studio
Teachers can quickly choose and save game settings, then assign games to individual students or groups. This could be beneficial because as educators we all know that in a class of 24 there are always students that are excelling at their own individualized pace. This program allows games to be assigned to students that will best fit where they are at when developing skills. Take a look at a variety of place value games that can be assigned to students. (Place Value Games) Standard: 3.NSBT.1 I can use my understand of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. |
